The San Carlos Chickens' Ball Celebrates 80 Years on The Stage
"CB is the Longest Running Show in the Peninsula
San Carlos, CA—January 09, 2020—The San Carlos Chickens' Ball (CB) is poised to open its curtains for the 80th year running, starting on March 13-15, and again on March 20-22 with the theme, "The Night They Invented Champagne." CB 2020 cast and crew are hard at work on production for the upcoming shows. Tickets are now on sale at www.eventbrite.com/e/san-carlos-chickens-ball-2020-the-night-they-invented-champagne-tickets-80592120201. The olden melodrama variety show raises thousands of dollars in support of the San Carlos local schools for the benefit of Cultural Education. "I think it is tremendous to be able to celebrate 80 years in production at this day and age," says Mona Klein, CB's General Chair. "Some of the cast members are long-standing performers, and though none of it is paid work, the outcome is always extraordinary."
"I am a big fan and believer of this wildly entertaining show, and cannot say enough great things about the good work that they are doing for the schools," says Mayor Ron Collins, who is a longtime CB sponsor, supporter, and former participant. "It takes courage, dedication, and good humor to go in front of a live audience to sing and dance, and they are amazing!" added the mayor. Held every two years at the Mustang Hall of Central Middle School in San Carlos, the Chickens' Ball is an original melodrama and variety skits that are written and submitted by community organizations, and are based on the history of the Barbary Coast Era, circa 1889 to 1918.
"This year, we celebrate 80 years of performing in a community where people pull together to help support our local schools' visual and performing arts," says Karen Althoff, CB Production Chair. What started in 1939 became an embedded tradition for San Carlos when a former teacher at Central School, Howard Demeke, was looking for other ways to fund the public schools, "to raise milk money; early in the war years," he said. The vaudeville features song and dance to contemporary music, which is mainly funded by the local PTAs, businesses, and individual sponsors.
